Francine Volpe is a New York City based playwright. Her play The Given opened at Studio Dante in October, 2006 and was directed by the award winning actor Michael Imperioli. The play was subsequently named a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Her play Late Fragment was produced at Studio Dante in September, 2005 and was also produced by The New Company in London in July, 2006. Her one-act play "Sweethearts" was commissioned by The New Company and premiered in London in May, 2005. Other one-act plays include: "The Confession" (produced at the Atlantic Theater), "The Broker" (Soho Rep), "Call The Person You Love" (Dance Theater Workshop, Soho Rep), and "When Everyone Was Looking" (Soho Rep). Francine’s most recent play Giftbox was commissioned and produced at the stageFARM Theater in New York City. Francine's other plays have received readings and workshops at A.C.T., Arena Stage, SoHo Rep and The Juilliard School.
Francine received her B.F.A. from New York University’s TISCH School of The Arts in Dramatic Writing. She was later the recipient of a two-year Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwriting Fellowship at The Juilliard School where she completed her graduate study. At Juilliard, Francine studied closely with Marsha Norman and Christopher Durang. She has twice received grants from the Lecomte du Nouy Foundation. Francine was nominated in 2008 for The Kesselring Award, The Wasserstein Prize, and The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize
Francine is Director of Play Development at Studio Dante Theater in New York where she has acted as champion and dramaturge to the world premiere plays of some of New York City’s most talented young playwrights. These include Mike Batistick’s critically acclaimed Ponies, and Chicken, Ron Fitzgerald’s Cyclone (Obie Award, Marin Ireland Best Actress), Sam Mark’s The Joke, and Julia Jordan’s Dark Yellow (Finalist, The 2007 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize) among others. Recently Francine joined WET productions and developed their INKubator series, a developmental program for playwrights, and joined the company as the Director Of Play Development. Francine is also a mentor for WET’s Risk Takers Film Series, A Media Literacy & Leadership Program For Teenage Girls. Francine teaches a subsidized playwriting class at Studio Dante and sits on the artistic advisory board of the stageFARM Theater.
